Why Portland's Active Lifestyle Can Be Hard on Hypermobile Bodies

Portland runs on movement. We bike to work in the rain, hike Forest Park on our days off, roll out a mat for the Tuesday yoga class we've been meaning to try. And honestly? That's one of the things I love most about living here. Movement is woven into the culture in a way that feels genuinely joyful.


But here's the thing — if you have hypermobility, hEDS, or HSD, you've probably noticed something that's hard to explain to people: the more you do, the worse you sometimes feel. You lace up for a hike with a group of friends. Everyone else comes home tired in that satisfying way. You come home and spend the next two days on the couch wondering what happened.


That's not weakness. That's not being out of shape. That's your body telling you something that most fitness advice isn't equipped to hear.

Your joints are working without a net


Think of a rubber band. A regular one has built-in tension — it resists, it recoils, it holds its shape. Now imagine one that was made with a little more give in the material itself. It still works. It still stretches and returns. But that extra elasticity means it doesn't provide the same taut, reliable structure throughout its range. In a hypermobile body, ligaments are a bit like that — not damaged, not worn out, just made with more give than average. This means the muscles and nervous system have to provide the stability that the ligaments easily handle in a less mobile body. That changes everything about how a hypermobile body experiences exercise.


You go for a bike ride. It feels great — until a few miles in when your kneecap starts wandering around and your hip flexors are screaming. Or you take a yoga class and the teacher keeps complimenting your flexibility, encouraging you to go deeper. So you do. And two days later your SI joints ache in ways that are impossible to describe to anyone who hasn't felt it.


Or maybe it's the hike. The first half feels fine. Then the trail gets rocky and the descent starts. And if you have hypermobile knees, you already know what happens next — that particular combination of instability and fatigue that makes every downhill step feel like a negotiation. Your quads are working overtime trying to control a joint that doesn't have reliable passive support. By the time you reach the trailhead, your knees have had enough.

What's happening in each of these scenarios isn't a lack of strength or fitness. It's that your joints are being asked to work overtime to stabilize themselves under load, repeatedly — without the passive support most bodies take for granted. And when the stabilizers fatigue, the joints start to wobble and can get out of control. The nervous system notices. It sends up a flare.


Why fatigue hits differently in a hypermobile body


Here's what I want you to understand: you are working harder than it looks.


When your ligaments can't do their passive stabilizing job, your muscles fill in the gaps. That's extra effort on every step, every pedal stroke, every sun salutation. It's invisible from the outside — you look like everyone else moving through the same activity — but inside, your system is running through a lot more energy.


That's why the crash comes. That's why you wake up the day after a moderate hike feeling like you ran a marathon. Your body isn't being dramatic. It did more work than anyone could see.


And there's a neurological layer too. A body that feels unstable tends to run its nervous system in a more alert, protective state — braced, watchful, ready for the next wobble. Add a loud, fast-paced group fitness class to that mix, and you've got a system that's already working overtime pushed further into overdrive. Coordination slips. Pain amplifies. You leave feeling worse than when you walked in, and you can't quite explain why.


Why the usual advice backfires


"You just need to strengthen." "Push through it." "You're so flexible — you should be great at this."


If you've lived in a hypermobile body for any length of time, you've heard all of it. And it's not that the people saying it are wrong to care — it's that the advice assumes a body that works differently than yours does.


Strength without coordination and proprioception can actually make things harder. Loading a joint that hasn't yet found its stable center can reinforce the very patterns that are causing problems in the first place. And "push through"? That signal telling you to stop — the wobble, the fatigue, the ache — is your body doing its job. The signal is the useful part. Ignoring it actually puts your system and your body at risk.


What movement can look like when it actually fits your body


So what do we do? I'm not going to give you a list of exercises, because that's not really how this works. What helps is movement that's built around your body's specific way of being hypermobile — because no two hypermobile bodies behave the same.


But there are some principles that tend to matter. Spring-based resistance — the kind used in Pilates-based work and on the CoreAlign®, which many Portlanders already know — gives your body responsive, graded feedback rather than a fixed load. Your system can meet it where it is. Closed-chain movement, where a foot or hand stays anchored, gives a joint something real to organize around. Working within a controlled range means your muscles — not your ligaments — are doing the job. And all of it builds proprioception: your body's ability to know where it is in space, which is often the piece that's been missing all along.
